Isaiah 61:4 Livelihood

Our livelihood program, led by Emy and Cindy, is growing so quickly! They have expanded their product line (thanks Lani, for all your creative ideas!), and have increased their sales. Primarily funded by our friends at PACTEC on the Freeport, Isaiah 61 has trained and given jobs to 15 residents of the Olongapo area. This is run as a ministry with the hopes that not only will the workers support their families, but they will be able to do other activities to help their community grow and know God!

Our bags are made from recycled, waterproof, industrial strength vinyl trimmed with a variety of fabrics. We call these "Matibayong", a play on the words "matibay" (strong, durable) and "bayong" (shopping bag). The bags come in many styles and sizes. Here are a few new pictures of the livelihood and the products:

Youth Girls Retreat

Victoria, Stephanie and Brittany hosted a girl's youth retreat last weekend for 14 of our high school and young adult women. It was a fun-packed retreat with devotions, worship, games and, of course, LOTS OF FOOD! They had such a good time with each other and had an opportunity to strengthen their walk with the Lord.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

We thanked 30 of our community volunteers at last night's Appreciation dinner. It was a fun time of family fellowship, food and thanksgiving to God for all that He is doing on 12th St. After dinner we played a couple of games and the competition was fierce! We all laughed so much and cried a few tears of joy. Certificates were awarded to the various volunteers from the men's, women's, youth, children, and feeding ministries. Our volunteers really are "Oaks of Righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor" (Isaiah 61:3). They stand firmly rooted and strong in their love of the Lord and are committed to seeing God transform their community. What a blessing they are to so many!

First, a big THANKS to Sierra Pines Church for organizing the Christmas gifts for the kids! And MARAMING SALAMAT to CRC! With the funding being the lowest we have experienced in the last three years, we weren't sure what we could do for Christmas. Now our local Olongapo church, Church of the Risen Christ, will be hosting a party for the 12th St. women, and Sierra Pines is sending gifts for the children! We will serve spaghetti (for you non-Filipinos, sweet spaghetti is THE dish of choice here at Christmas!) at the children's feeding/ministry and decorate the "12th St Meeting Place" (we dont want to call it the "vacant lot" anymore). We are continually amazed at God's provision and the goodness of the body of Christ!

Our friend, Becher Marr, produced a short video to show at SPC and you can see it on youtube:

Thanks Becher- it is such a good video! A real glimpse into the people and ministry of Project Life.

Medical Outreach in the Jail

..."I was in prison and you came to visit me"... Matt 25:36

We were invited into the jail to hold a medical outreach last Friday. At first it didn't seem possible, no doctor or dentist available, litle money for meds, but we felt we needed to step out in faith and go. Our friend, Claire (from Helping Hands), provided meds and brought a doc with her, our leadership team came armed with BP cuffs, and registration forms and in we went! 260 patients were treated and educated about their diseases. Sonny and John Santos (former inmate) treated skin diseases, Claire set up a prayer station, Leslie triaged and treated various simple ailments and taught health ed with the help of a couple inmates. Emmy took care of the pharmacy, Cindy and Cathy did blood pressures, Tina, Connie and Anthony took care of registration, forms and more. Many were prayed for and 4 gave their hearts to Jesus that morning. Pastor Mar (we support his weekly men's bible study in the jail) will do the follow-up with the 4 men. Our Youth Dance Crew entertained the 600+ inmates with two dances. Bringing a medical outreach team to the jail is about more than treating physical disease. It's a way to show the prisoners love and compassion, and to encourage them when they feel hopeless.

Doctor Fermantes did an excellent job and was a blessing to the inmates!(Faces of inmates blurred to protect privacy)

Music Class has new teachers!!

Help has arrived! We have been praying for months for someone to come help and carry the workload and we have had our prayers answered in triplicate! Three Canadian sisters, Victoria (18yr.) , Stephanie (20), and Brittany (20) (yes, they are TWINS!) are here for six months. They are accomplished musicians and are teaching our youth piano, violin and guitar. They will also lead the English classes soon. (more on that later...)

They are so surprised at how quickly the students are learning and how eager they are to learn.
We are so blessed to have these young women helping with music, youth and English class. They are great role models for our youth!

Community Worship Night and Livelihood Grand Opening!

The Youth led our Community Worship and Intercession night on 12th St this month. It was well attended, and many came for prayer. 12th St. residents had such a good time worshipping and praying together, for each other and for their community! Beautiful praise music was heard throughout the neighborhood. All are eagerly awaiting next month’s worship night and will bring their friends and family!

Isaiah 61:4 Livelihood had their Official Grand Opening! Managers Cindy and Emy welcomed guests and honored our livelihood supporters and friends. The remodeled room has space for 5 high speed machines and 4 treadle machines. Cindy, Emy and Leslie are searching for outlets to sell these bags made from recycled materials and trimmed with various colors and material. The “Matibay-Yong! Bagz” (Bayong is a shopping bag, Matibay means strong) comes in two sizes and a zippered version as well. They are also making purses and laptop bags and hope to do custom bags for local groups. They are waterproof and extremely durable.
Two weeks from now we will join the mayor at the weekly City Hall flag ceremony where he will endorse the products. Then Isaiah 61:4 will have an opportunity to sell the bags in the lobby of City Hall for that entire week! Pray for the success of this business and that it would grow to provide jobs for many more of the poor!

JULY NEWS

There’s so much to share this month, no way to keep it brief so here goes:

 The Birth Attendant School midwives left the YWAM base the end of May and Leslie left a few days later to teach at YWAM’s University of the Nations Kona campus. It was a rejuvenating week, (the campus environment is both peaceful and invigorating!) spent with friends, staff and students of the Community Development School. They will be going to Haiti for their 3 month outreach, joining hundreds of YWAMers serving there. We were also joined by other seminar students who are training to teach childbirth classes at the Kona Crisis Pregnancy Center.

 after THAT we hosted the 12th St. women’s leadership retreat at our YWAM base. Five women gathered here to be nurtured and taught. The theme was “Being loved…loving others”. The teachings were based on the Father’s love for them, and also the importance of loving their neighbors. They also had a fun time and received many unexpected blessings! The women are now practicing what they learned as they lead the 12th St. women. Thanks to all of you who participated by sending letters of love and encouragement to our women.

 The Isaiah 61:4 livelihood project is up and running! The core group is well trained and now training others how to sew and how to use the high speed machines. Others are receiving training on machine maintenance and repair. They have gone into production and are gearing up for a full scale business. Approximately 14 people have jobs and more will be trained in the near future. This is giving jobs to former trash scavengers and others with no high school diploma or job skills. Please pray for the leaders of this project as they learn the skills needed to have a successful business. They are getting training to do accounting, marketing and management. Hopefully, this project will be duplicated someday in other areas of the city. We are so excited to see what happens with this in the future!

Another bit of exciting news: 20 of the 12th St residents have been granted free Phil Health coverage! The head of the Phil Health Indigency Program and his assistant came to our vacant lot and met with over 40 attendees last week. They gave a thorough presentation about the program, its benefits and how to qualify for this medical insurance. For those that have some work but are still poor, they may sign up for a 300 Peso ($7) per year fee. Leslie is submitting a request to the Honorable Mayor Gordon asking for him to approve 30 more families for the free health care. Pray that this is granted! We recently had an unnecessary infant death due to the mother not seeking medical care because she had no money.

 Men’s Bible study is GROWING! The men are so interested in the “Purpose Driven Life” study that Sonny is leading. They recently had a guest speaker, John Santos, who was released from jail last month. John has been leading the men’s bible study in the jail with Pastor Mar for the last two years. Please keep him in prayer as he transitions to a new life.

 We attended the “Blessing” of the new Pag-Asa Health Center’s Birth Center the end of June. Project Life was able to donate time and money (big “thanks “ to last year’s Primary Health Care team from Perth and others for donation) to help open this center to serve the local women. (And our livelihood project made the curtains!) Of course, there was LOTS of food and karaoke! Fun to see all the docs, midwives and other healthcare workers turn out for the big event.

 We are currently hosting a counseling team from the YWAM Kona campus. They will be here until the 25th. Leslie leaves again July 31 to teach for one week at the Birth Attendant School in Perth, Australia. Then we will slow down a bit the rest of that month. HA! We’ll try….
Thanks so much for your interest in our ministry. We hope you feel like you are a part of all we do. We certainly couldn’t do this without your prayers, love and support! God bless,
Sonny & Leslie
